This follow-up to the 2011 shocker Insidious is the stronger film, yet you almost need to have seen the first movie to make sense of the second. Once again the Lambert family, poster children for the vanishing middle class, confront demonic forces from the Further, a hellish afterlife/alternate dimension where malignant ghosts mingle with the souls/astral projections of living sleepwalkers. This time around otherworldly fiends target the entire clan, using dad (Patrick Wilson) as their conduit. The ghouls are more fully developed as characters than in the original, the spirit trackers are used to better comic effect, and the production design shows more flair. But as before, it’s all more silly than scary. James Wan directed.
