In this charming video mockumentary, written and directed by D.P. Carlson, a scruffy group of high school-age dodgeball players from Chicago prepare for the sport’s second annual tournament. Carlson adeptly creates a spontaneous cinema verite quality, and the young cast—many of whom are nonprofessionals—deliver nicely understated performances, improvising dialogue in keeping with the basic story line. The highlight of the video is when the excitable title character, who’s also the coach, announces that he’s found a sponsor, the venerable hot-dog stand Superdawg, lending the team both a name and an identity. The video concludes with the tournament, a humbling experience that forces several players to contemplate the rigors of competition. With Michael Leo Pomeranz, Jessica Szohr, and Will Malnati. 68 min.
