In this 1999 fusion of the documentary and the poetic, Juan Carlos Rulfo attempts to capture the spirit of his father, Mexican poet and novelist Juan Rulfo. And spirit is pretty much all we get, for the elderly acquaintances interviewed seem to have forgotten more than they remember—even his widow has a dream in which he has no face. Sun-drenched faces and landscapes are made to seem like magical presences, but time-lapse shots of fast-moving clouds are a trite way to evoke the film’s theme, that the past can never be recaptured.
