Alain Gsponer directed this short but compelling German feature about a Serbian immigrant (Lenn Kudrjawizki) and his unrequited love for an illegal Albanian refugee from Kosovo (Stipe Erceg). Their friendship is threatened by the Serbian’s brutal father, who despises Albanians, and by the refugee’s growing fondness for a local girl, while the mounting violence in faraway Kosovo extends its grip over all their lives. This feels like it’s in serious need of a third act, but it’s still an engaging and accomplished drama from a promising new director. In German with subtitles.
