Paul Scofield’s Lear, in Peter Brooks’s 1971 film, is one of the great Shakespearean performances. For this Lear, the world is in a constant state of decomposition: Shakespeare in the style of Beckett. The film was shot on location in Denmark, with a marvelous cast that includes Irene Worth as Goneril, Tom Fleming as Lent, and Alan Webb as Gloucester.
