A longtime pet project for producer Jeremy Thomas (who’s collaborated with Nicolas Roeg, Bernardo Bertolucci, and David Cronenberg), this British-Norwegian coproduction recounts the 1947 voyage in which explorer Thor Heyerdahl traveled across the Pacific Ocean on the titular wooden raft. Directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg generate suspense from the daily challenges of the journey and offer plenty of impressive (if not inspired) natural imagery. The characters don’t register as much more than genre archetypes, but that doesn’t spoil the fun, since the filmmakers re-create the journey in such vivid detail.
