Finnish hipster filmmaker Aki Kaurismaki loosely adapts and updates Henri Murger’s Scenes de la vie de Boheme to contemporary Paris in a melancholy comedy about an Albanian painter, a French poet, and an Irish composer who become friends (1991). On the same program, Where Is Musette?, a 50-minute documentary by Veikko Nieminen and Jarmo Vesteri about the making of La Vie de Boheme and Kaurismaki’s filmmaking in general, including interviews with Jean-Pierre Leaud, Samuel Fuller, Matti Pellonpaa, and Kari Vaananen (1991); to be shown on video.
