This German docudrama recounts the events leading up to the Nuremberg trials of 1963, in which former Nazis were tried by the national government for crimes against humanity committed during World War II. It centers on a young public prosecutor who learns about the concentration camps and becomes determined to bring war criminals to justice, only to encounter opposition from government officials engaged in a conspiracy to cover up Nazi atrocities. The film is handsomely mounted, nicely acted, and relatively lacking in cheap sentiment (though a romantic subplot involving the prosecutor and an aspiring fashion designer feels superfluous). It’s a worthwhile history lesson, dramatizing Germany’s efforts to reconcile with its monstrous past. Giulio Ricciarelli directed. In German with subtitles.
