The masterful Writer-Director Jacques Audiard draws vivid performances from Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises) and Matthias Schoenaerts (Bullhead) for this gripping French romance about the body and the soul. Their characters meet when he’s a bouncer at a club and she requires an escort home, then again months later, after a terrible accident at the marine park where she works has taken her legs below the knee. She becomes his friend, sometime lover, and loyal supporter when he loses his job and turns to bare-knuckle fights for cash, but as she’s rehabilitated and renews her self-respect, she begins to want more. Like the rest of Audiard’s films (Read My Lips, The Beat That My Heart Skipped, A Prophet) this is dense with character and subtle in its narrative construction, tracing two lives as they collide but refuse to intersect. In French with subtitles.
