Reese Witherspoon and a large wardrobe of snappy pink outfits star in this sequel to Legally Blonde, along with Bob Newhart (who’s squandered as a doorman) and Sally Field (who digs into the part of Witherspoon’s two-faced mentor as if she were playing Medea and walks away with her every scene). Like the first movie, this has some cute gags but collapses like a soggy paper plate, never deciding whether to mock or celebrate the heroine’s shallow materialism. The plot is yet another rip-off of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, so there’s a bit with Witherspoon watching Jimmy Stewart’s passionate filibuster scene; I don’t think I’ve ever wanted so badly to escape from one movie into another. Charles Herman-Wurmfeld directed. 105 min.
