Jean-Paul Sartre wrote his first original screenplay for this 1947 film, an allegorical treatment of the freshly ended German occupation, set in a mythical country taken over by a fascist dictatorship. Micheline Presle and Marcel Pagliero (of Open City) star as two lovers who must argue before a political court for their right to live. Jean Delannoy directed.
