Fredric March as Victor Hugo’s reformed thief, forever hounded by police inspector Charles Laughton. Richard Boleslawski, once of the Moscow Art Theater, directed this 1935 Fox production, and it isn’t a bad example of the Hollywood prestige picture—there is, at least, some liveliness in the performances. With Cedric Hardwicke, Rochelle Hudson, Frances Drake, John Beal, and John Carradine; photographed by Gregg Toland. 108 min.
