The singular writer-director Christopher Munch (Color of a Brisk and Leaping Day, The Sleepy Time Gal) returns after a long hiatus with a movie that’s characteristically sweet and strange. A newly single woman in her 30s (Lily Rabe, daughter of Jill Clayburgh and the playwright David Rabe) encounters and gradually befriends a Sasquatch in the Pacific Northwest; that might suggest a fairy tale, but the movie is actually a chamber drama about the woman, a hydrologist and amateur painter whose passion for nature alienates her from the other people in her life. Munch never quite reconciles his psychological and environmental themes, but his characters are so richly imagined and the location photography (by his regular cinematographer, Rob Sweeney) is so gorgeous that the movie still casts a rare spell.
