Levitated Mass

Directed and edited by Doug Pray, this documentary about the title artwork—a 340-ton slab of granite suspended over a 15-foot ditch in front of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art—plays like something from the Learning Channel. The numerous man-on-the-street interviews and the clips from TV profiles of sculptor Michael Heizer encourage only a superficial interest in the work. As soon as anyone starts say something thoughtful about Heizer or the social value of art, Pray jumps to another neat-looking wide shot of the rock to keep us oohing and aahing.
