Australian writer-director Cate Shortland, who made an impressive feature debut with Somersault (2004), returns at last with a gripping second feature that marks both a continuation of and a radical departure from the first. Like Somersault (which made a star of Abbie Cornish), it’s the story of a budding young woman grappling with the adult world, but this time it takes place in Germany just after the Allied invasion and the protagonist is the daughter of a high-ranking Nazi officer; after her parents are rounded up by the occupying forces, she’s forced to transport her four siblings cross-country to her grandmother’s house. Saskia Rosendahl gives an impressively poised performance as the beautiful teenager, whose determination to protect her remaining family coincides with her growing revulsion toward her parents as she begins to understand the enormity of her father’s crimes. In German with subtitles.
