With two sentimentalists as crafty as director Frank Capra and novelist James Hilton collaborating on a project, the results could hardly be anything less than effective, yet this 1937 film has a swollen self-seriousness that drains most of my sympathy for it. Shangri-La, seductive but stifling, plays much too close for comfort to American anti-intellectualism; more than any other of his 30s classics, Lost Horizon gives credence to reports that Capra kept a bust of Mussolini in his office through the decade. Still, Ronald Colman’s grace and charm excuse a lot of directorial heaviness. With H.B. Warner, Thomas Mitchell, Edward Everett Horton, Jane Wyatt, Margo, Sam Jaffe, and Isabel Jewell.
