A mercurial robot (with the voice of Dick Tufeld, the voice of the robot in the 60s TV series that inspired this 1998 movie), a reluctant pilot (Matt LeBlanc), a saboteur-turned-stowaway (Gary Oldman), and the Robinson family (William Hurt, Mimi Rogers, Heather Graham, Lacey Chabert, and Jack Johnson) get on a spaceship bound for Alpha Prime to kick off a colonization experiment. But time-travel cliches, female characters who exert authority only so we’ll laugh at the pussy-whipped males, dialogue that’s neither self-mocking nor serious, and an ostentatious though not particularly exciting production design keep the movie from taking off. Stephen Hopkins directed a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman.
