Love the Coopers

In this big hunk of cheese, Diane Keaton and John Goodman play a long-married couple on the verge of separation who bring their family together for one last Christmas. Ed Helms and Olivia Wilde play their grown children, Marisa Tomei is Keaton’s sister, and June Squibb and Alan Arkin are some dotty old relatives. Everyone has some embarrassing secret he’s afraid to share with the group (Helms has been laid off, Tomei has been caught shoplifting), but everything comes to light and they realize they all love each other anyway. The dialogue consists of sitcom-ready cliches and the characterizations are all one-dimensional, but the cast do what they can to eke some charm out of the material. Jessie Nelson (I Am Sam) directed a script by Steven Rogers.
