The late Victor Argo, a character actor recognizable from his tough-guy roles in Scorsese and Jarmusch movies, gives one of his final performances in this elegiac digital video by Art Jones. Argo plays a loan shark, losing his grip on reality, who roams around a gritty but vibrant New York that seems to be slipping into the past. In gruff voice-over, he rants like a beat poet about a city that “used to sing in another key, hitting high notes that reinvented the scales.” Jones’s script leans too heavily on the familiar device of blurring illusion and reality, but his view of the urban landscape is beautiful and distinctive. 81 min.
