Andrzej Wajda’s 1981 sequel to Man of Marble is a more forthright film politically, though the attempt to continue the investigative format of the original causes some serious problems in structure and pacing. The object of inquiry here is the history of the Solidarity movement, not, as in the first, of an individual—and so it faces the problem even Eisenstein could never solve: how to give dramatic presence to the idea of “the masses.” Still, the material is inherently stirring enough to overcome most objections—this is a relatively unsuccessful film that encourages standing ovations.
