We will never know what happy accident caused Henry King to overcome his usual stiffness (In Old Chicago, The Gunfighter) and produce this soft and charming nostalgia piece about a young woman (Jeanne Crain) attending college in the 1920s. In the postwar boom for evocations of vanished Americana, this 1946 film ranks somewhere in the neighborhood of Meet Me in St. Louis. The superb Technicolor photography is the work of Charles Clarke; Glenn Langan, Alan Young, and Lynn Bari costar.
