The premise of this Czech documentary could double as the set-up for a Jewish joke: a paternalistic mayor, determined to increase the population of his small town, goes on a guilt-tripping rampage and bullies all his single constituents into dating. Predictably, his efforts result in a lot of social embarrassment; not so predictably, they create a culture of invasiveness that recalls the surveillance of the communist era (in one sequence a female official pressures singles to attend a mixer by visiting each one at home, unannounced). Director Erika Hnikova doesn’t overemphasize the dark ironies of her material, nor does she have to. In Slovak with subtitles.
