Swiss artist Max Bill was a left-leaning sculptor, painter, typographer, and Bauhaus scenester who collaborated, rubbed shoulders, or shared lovers with the likes of Pablo Picasso, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Paul Klee, Ignazio Silone, and Walter Gropius. With this handsomely mounted 2008 documentary, director Erich Schmid argues that Bill is a forgotten genius awaiting rediscovery, above all for his sensuous, curvilinear sculptures. This argument might have been more persuasive had Schmid not leaned so heavily on the dolefully reverent testimony of Angela Thomas, who’s not only his wife but Max Bill’s widow and guardian of the artist’s memory.
