Taylor Greeson’s autobiographical documentary focuses on key events that happened when he was 12, including his first sexual experiences (with a 20-year-old man) and the murder of his older brother. Mixing family snapshots, brooding long takes of the Montana landscapes of his childhood, and voice-over interviews with his first lover and his brother’s killer, Greeson produces a rambling, sometimes affecting meditation on his own, perhaps not fully formed, identity. His brother remains something of a mystery, his lover sounds duly remorseful, and his Mormon religion seems mostly in his past. Greeson commendably avoids placing blame, and a brief but funny coda with his three-year-old nephew illustrates his acceptance of the notion that we’re all flawed. 79 min.
