In case you’ve lost count, this is the fourth restoration of Fritz Lang’s 1927 sci-fi epic, begun in 2008 after a 16-millimeter reduction print of the original cut was discovered in Argentina. Containing 25 minutes of previously lost footage that brings the movie back within eight minutes of its running time at its German premiere, this will probably wind up being the standard version. Some of the footage consists of mere reaction shots clipped from otherwise preserved scenes, but there are also completely new scenes that explain one minor character (the shadowy capitalist spy the Thin Man) and fill out a major relationship (between Joh Fredersen, lord of the futuristic city, and Rotwang, the outlaw scientist who creates the robotic woman). As the most complete representation of Lang’s original vision, it’s a masterpiece by any measure.
