In the kind of ugly-duckling role that’s long been ironic for her, Sandra Bullock plays an unkempt FBI agent who’s happy to be treated like one of the guys. But her world is rocked when by default—she’s the only agent who isn’t male or apparently over 30—she’s picked for an undercover assignment as a beauty-pageant contestant. Fellow agent Benjamin Bratt falls for Bullock as she becomes glamorous in his eyes and ridiculous in her own—all thanks to Michael Caine, a pageant coach who, in a radical twist, is not only effeminate but gay. Not surprisingly, both tomboy and chauvinist learn that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Donald Petrie directed a screenplay by Marc Lawrence, Katie Ford, and Caryn Lucas. 110 min.
