Directed by the legendary master of the grade-Z movie, Edgar G. Ulmer (Detour), and produced by the no-less-legendary black independent Oscar Micheaux, this all-black melodrama from 1939 is largely set (for obvious budgetary reasons) within a Harlem nightclub, where gangster action and family conflict vie for attention with musical numbers by Sidney Bechet and His Swinging Band. It’s one of the rarest of Ulmer’s features. 68 min.
