Indian director Onir makes an auspicious debut with this sentimental but persuasive drama about a gay champion swimmer (Sanjay Suri) in late-80s Goa who learns that he’s HIV positive. His sister (Juhi Chawla) is the only relative to stand by him when he’s ostracized, arrested, and held without trial. The musical numbers may suggest standard Bollywood fare, but the subject matter and Onir’s sympathetic treatment are relatively new for a country whose constitution still outlaws “unnatural” sexual intercourse. With Victor Banerjee and Purab Kohli. In English and subtitled Hindi. 120 min.
