My Name Is Negahdar Jamali and I Make Westerns

This Iranian documentary profiles a working-poor eccentric in Shiraz who’s been making amateur movies since the late 1970s, financing them with what little money he has. Director Kamran Heidari presents his subject as a comic dreamer and scores some gentle laughs from his no-budget film shoots. The tone is so resolutely upbeat, in fact, that when Jamali’s wife sues him for divorce after complaining for years of being neglected, the development registers first as a punchline. For better and for worse, this succeeds in conveying its subject’s exceedingly limited worldview. In Farsi with subtitles.
