Werner Herzog has enjoyed a hell of a run since the turn of the century, cranking out good to great dramas (Invincible, Rescue Dawn, The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans) and consistently absorbing documentaries (The White Diamond, Grizzly Man, Encounters at the End of the World). But even Herzog loyalists will have to concede that this fact-based 2009 hostage drama is a serious dud. Michael Shannon stars as a Christian fanatic in San Diego who runs his mother through with a sword; Willem Dafoe and Michael Cena are cops trying to talk this maniac out of his home, where he’s holed up with a rifle. David Lynch served as executive producer; and though a collaboration between him and Herzog might promise all manner of inspired weirdness, what they deliver is the sort of fake mysticism that usually ensues when secular intellectuals try to plumb the depths of religious faith.
