Following Neil Young: Heart of Gold (2006), this is the second installment in Jonathan Demme’s planned trilogy of Neil Young concert documentaries. Demme recorded a 2007 show at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia, and aside from a few cutaways—Neil walking down a trash-strewn alley to the stage door, Neil getting a hangnail removed—most of the action takes place onstage, the set divided between solo acoustic tunes and blistering electric blowouts (including a twenty-minute version of “No Hidden Path”). The music sounds terrific, with Young’s wizened expression and rheumy eyes belied by the storming intensity of his performances. Demme has said, “If you’re not a Neil Young fan, don’t waste your time,” and that’s really all you need to know. 83 min.
