This documentary chronicles how a few dozen Ukrainian Jews hid in a subterranean cave for almost three years to evade capture by the Nazis. For the most part director Janet Tobias (a TV news veteran) presents the material like a children’s adventure story; the movie is engaging but appallingly superficial when it considers the larger history of the Holocaust. The framing story, about a present-day explorer who finds the hideout, gives the impression that uncovering Holocaust stories is fun and exciting rather than a moral imperative.
