A sweet but aimless real estate agent (Cesar Troncoso) tries to get out of a personal rut by taking up acting, only to alienate his careerist wife and friends. This 2010 Uruguayan feature is an affecting comedy of everyday disappointment, filling out a subgenre that had its heyday during the Czech new wave and has since enjoyed a renaissance with South American films like Whisky, Seawards Journey, and The Pope’s Toilet. Writer-director Daniel Hendler acted in the first of those, and Troncoso appeared in the others; working together, they strike a balance between low-key humor and genuine melancholy. As a director Hendler demonstrates an actor’s indulgence for character quirks but never lets them overwhelm the story’s pungent ironies. In Spanish with subtitles.
