Directed by Michael Noer, this isn’t quite the Danish Goodfellas, but as in the Scorsese film, the protagonist is a young man lured into the underworld, first as a small-stakes burglar, then as a driver for the outfit’s escort service, and eventually as an assassin. The hoods here are so small-time that a life of crime never seems intoxicating: the Copenhagen winter is bleak, and even the most accomplished criminals live in crappy houses and drive used cars. Noer’s approach to the gangster film isn’t radically different, but the characters are unpredictable, the pacing is brisk, and the well-timed sharp turns kept my interest throughout. In Danish with subtitles.
