A British sex comedy in a realistic vein, a mixture of Ealing and the kitchen sink. Peter Sellers plays a librarian who has a brief affair with the wife of the local Welsh alderman. Adapted by Brian Forbes from Kingsley Amis’s novel That Uncertain Feeling, this 1962 film, like much of the British cinema of its day, makes rather too much a virtue of its smallness and limitations, but Sellers and Mai Zetterling evoke mature feelings of passion, something that Sellers would never accomplish again despite his great skills. With Virginia Maskell, Richard Attenborough, Raymond Huntley, Kenneth Griffith, and John Le Mesurier; directed by the underrated Sidney Gilliat. 106 min.
