This 130-minute program collects all four short documentaries nominated for this year’s Academy Awards, and though all are worthy, the clear standout is The Death of Kevin Carter: Casualty of the Bang Bang Club by Dan Krauss. Carter, a photojournalist from South Africa, won a Pulitzer for his gut-wrenching photo of a little girl starving to death in Sudan under the watchful eye of a vulture, but many who saw it condemned his exploitation of the tragedy, and ultimately he committed suicide. The other entries are The Mushroom Club, about Hiroshima’s fading memory of its own tragic history; God Sleeps in Rwanda, which profiles female survivors of the 1994 genocide; and A Note of Triumph, a biography of the inspirational radio poet Norman Corwin.
