A minimally cinematic transcription of the National Theater production mounted by Laurence Olivier in 1965. Olivier’s Othello is funny, roguish, and sensual, with occasional off-putting touches of racial caricature. It’s a fresh approach to the part, but it serves Olivier more than the text. The supporting cast includes Frank Finlay, Maggie Smith, and Derek Jacobi; Stuart Burge pointed the cameras. 166 min.
