Fei Fei (voiced by newcomer Cathy Ang) is a young girl in an unnamed Chinese town who builds a bunny-shaped rocket ship to jet to the moon with hopes of finding moon goddess Chang’e. Directed by Glen Keane, formerly of Disney, this animated musical deals with themes of grief and family, all unwinding across a backdrop of luminous animation. There are a few standout musical numbers, in particular the poppy numbers sung by Chang’e (Philippa Soo), as well as the soaring solo that spurs Fei Fei on her quest. Still, there are moments where the plot begins to feel stale and stodgy, as if it’s lost the jet fuel it needs to power it through to the end. Overall, a very pretty watch with a few predictable bumps.
