A neurotic New York novelist (Jeff Daniels), unable to make progress on his second book, is installed in a quiet Montauk beach house by his long-suffering physician wife (Lisa Kudrow). But instead of working, he invests his energies in origami, building a couch from unsold copies of his first book; cultivates the friendship of an alienated, smart-mouthed teenage girl (Emma Stone); and argues with Captain Excellent (Ryan Reynolds), the superhero who’s been his imaginary frenemy since childhood. Written and directed by Michele Mulroney and Kieran Mulroney, this 2009 feature is a big Twinkie stuffed with indie-film cliches and glazed with chiming emo guitars.
