Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 1988 Cannes film festival, this 138-minute Danish feature—pared down somewhat from its original running time for American release, and based on Martin Andersen Nexo’s classic novel of the same name—follows the experiences of a Swedish father (Max von Sydow) and his young son Pelle (Pelle Hvenegaard) when they move to Denmark and work on a farm. Bille August (Twist and Shout) adapted the novel and directed.
