Krzysztof Kieslowski (The Decalogue) directed this hour-long feature, made in 1975 for Polish television, about a young nebbish in the costume department of the national opera who’s caught up in a conflict between the performers and the backstage crew. The story develops into a surprisingly effective allegory about artistic and personal responsibility in a state where the arts have become bureaucratized and taken for granted. Though the film lacks the elegance of Kieslowski’s later and better-known work, its irony and playfulness presage things to come. Definitely worth checking out if you’re a fan. In Polish with subtitles. 70 min.
