Set in the 1930s among the Parsi community (Indian citizens of Persian descent), this 1987 melodrama explores the complicated friendship between two bachelors: a prim, perpetually blinking accountant (Naseeruddin Shah) and a balding, easygoing man of leisure (Anupam Kher). The accountant passes up a chance for an arranged wedding with a lovely and musical young woman (Shabana Azni), but after his pal snaps her up as his bride, he falls in love with her, and a painful triangle ensues. Written and directed by TV veteran Vijaya Mehta, this is mercifully free of histrionics but equally free of dramatic tension; the main characters are too thin to sustain the tragic ending. 130 min.
