Dismal SF deep think (1968) that gave birth to an equally dismal string of sequels and TV spin-offs. Charlton Heston lands with his astronaut crew on a planet where simians are the rulers and sapiens are in cages. Bits and pieces of it work OK, and Franklin Schaffner’s direction is polished enough between the rhetorical bumps, but the sub-Darwinian ironies hang on this film like overripe bananas. Based on a novel by Pierre Boulle; with Kim Hunter, Roddy McDowall, and Maurice Evans.
