A retired soccer star from Scotland (Gerard Butler), bumming around the Virginia suburb where his ex-wife (Jessica Biel) and young son have landed, tries to make amends for his dissolute past. The comedy part of this romantic comedy consists of the hero agreeing to coach his son’s soccer team and the other kids’ mothers (Judy Greer, Uma Thurman, Catherine Zeta-Jones) hurling themselves at him sexually; the romantic part consists of Biel busting his chops and Butler learning that fatherhood is best, etc. Dennis Quaid hammers away at a nothing role as Thurman’s husband, an adulterous alpha dog; it’s nearly identical to the one he played earlier this year in What to Expect When You’re Expecting, but who’s counting? Gabriele Muccino (Pursuit of Happyness, Seven Pounds) directed.
