This found-footage assembly from New Zealand takes the form of a North Korean news report to mount a critical attack on many aspects of western society, touching on consumerism, celebrity culture, the military-industrial complex, and much more. Director Slavko Martinov was clearly inspired by British filmmaker Adam Curtis’s essay series The Century of the Self and The Power of Nightmares (he lifts sequences from both); this resembles Curtis’s work in its far-ranging argumentation and DeLilloesque paranoia, though it displays little of Curtis’s wit or ambiguity. Still, Martinov has fashioned a provocative thought experiment, considering how the United States and its allies might appear to a culture they vilify.
