This 2002 Brazilian film at first looks like a grim, realist drama, but morphs into an attempt at social satire. Musician PQD has a one night fling with an MTV reporter, but when thugs break into his apartment and beat and rob her, everyone assumes PQD is involved. He tries to find her and clear his name, but winds up involved in her brother’s crazy schemes to get money for drugs. Director Murilo Salles has clearly been watching “edgy” films like Go, Snatch, and the Tarantino oeuvre, but he never quite gets the giddy tone he wants, and so the stylistic flourishes, flashes of surprising violence, and Rube Goldberg plotting feel forced. In Portuguese with English subtitles. 90 min.
