Deliciously stripped down to its bare dramatic essentials, this early feature (1988) by maverick Slovenian director Damjan Kozole takes a page from Jean-Pierre Melville in relating the gripping story of a young man who inexplicably escapes from prison just days short of his release. Cruising in a flashy red car, he locates his girlfriend and heads for the port town of Split in the hopes of fleeing to America, only to discover that he’ll have to wait five days before the next ship departs. With precision and control, Kozole builds the tension and existential dread as, under cover of night, the couple moves from hideout to hideout with a cop in relentless pursuit. With Mario Selih, Lara Bohinc, and Jozef Roposa. In Slovene with subtitles. 80 min.
