Midnight-movie fans may already know Darren Lynn Bousman’s Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008),
an insane futuristic rock opera in which corporate goons barge into people’s homes and bloodily reclaim transplanted organs that haven’t been paid for on time. This Universal Pictures release has exactly the same premise but was reportedly hatched in 2003 by screenwriters Garrett Lerner and Eric Garcia (who’s published the story in novel form as The Repossession Mambo). Jude Law and Forest Whitaker are the callous thugs of the title, and Liev Schreiber is their white-collar boss; after a plot twist sticks Law with a transplanted heart he can’t pay off, he goes on the run with fellow deadbeat Alice Braga. This was too long, mean, and gory for me, though the satirical gloss and well-executed trick ending will probably impress some. Miguel Sapochnik directed. R, 111 min.
