A prizewinner in Norway, this debut feature by Joachim Trier traces the friendship between two young novelists, one who makes a splash with his first book and cracks under the pressure (Anders Danielson Lie) and another who takes a while to find himself but seems poised for a much longer and more substantial career (Espen Klouman-Hoiner). The movie is enjoyable for its flashy surfaces—the witty editing, the narrative forecasting, the droll omniscient voice-over—but as drama it seems superficial. Despite all the high-minded literary posing, Trier reveals nothing about the fiction of either young man, and without any sense of what their art is really about, this winds up being a little too impressed with the cultural cachet of the characters. In Norwegian with subtitles.
