Though based on a popular video game, this 2002 film’s heaviest influences are the works of George Romero and John Carpenter. A team of commandos descend into a secret underground lab where, unbeknownst to them, a zombie-making virus has been released. Milla Jovovich is a scantily clad amnesiac, Michelle Rodriguez is a tough soldier, and everyone else is zombie food. As in Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, a vague social message is buried in the gore—corporations are bad. And like Carpenter’s Halloween and The Thing, Resident hits the ground running and never looks back. But after an hour of propulsive pacing the shock value wears off, and all that’s left is pop-up carnage. Paul Anderson (Event Horizon) directed and wrote the screenplay.
